Long drought dooms Fountain Lake’s effort

HASKELL - A scoring drought of nearly seven minutes Thursday night cost Fountain Lake a chance to make the state tournament.

The drought bridged the first and second quarters, and Harding Academy took advantage with a 15-0 run, building a deficit too great for the Lady Cobras to overcome in a 50-42 victory in the first round of the Class 3A-2 Regional at Benton Harmony Grove.

The Lady Wildcats (23-6) turned a 13-8 deficit into a 22-13 advantage with the run. Fountain Lake (15-9) took its largest lead on a Rilee Bryant three-pointer with 2:14 left in the first and didn’t score again until Bailey Womack’s layup with 3:34 left in the half.

Riley Rose led the Lady Wildcats with 20 points, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of the third quarter after Fountain Lake had cut the deficit to 38-31.

Deidra McCoy led Fountain Lake with 11 points. Womack added 10 points.
