ELKINS - Paris rode the inside-outside connection of Christa Huber and Lycia Peevy to knock off Elkins on its home floor Thursday afternoon in the Class 3A Region 1 tournament.

Huber and Peevy combined for 34 points and the Lady Eagles made enough free throws down the stretch to earn the 56-44 victory.

Paris (25-6) struggled at the free-throw line late, making 13 of 20 in the fourth quarter and 23 of 35 for the game. But Lady Eagles Coach Toby Tevebaugh said his team has a habit of making enough to win.

“We’ve been kind of hot and cold all year on the freethrow line,” Tevebaugh said. “We seem to make them when we really have to. I also feel like we relaxed too much and didn’t focus as much as we should have.”

Peevy, a 6-1 freshman, scored 10 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter after being held to just four points and one field goal in the first half. Huber, a 5-8 senior guard, had 20, including 3 three-pointers.

Elkins Coach Monica Wells said her team struggled shooting the ball most of the night but started to press some in the second half as the Lady Elks shot just 27 percent from the floor for the game.

“It’s hard to get in a rhythm when shots aren’t falling,” Wells said. “They hit big shots at critical times. They are a good team. We were more patient in the first half than we were in the second half. When the ball doesn’t go in the hole you start to panic when you really don’t need to.”

Andrea Wilson was the only Elkins player with more than 10 points (19). Karly Krodell added nine off the bench. Wilson’s three-pointer gave Elkins a 33-31 lead with a minute left in the third quarter, but Paris finished with a 7-0 run and never trailed again.
