Bono City Council backs firing of police chief

BONO — The Bono City Council has voted to support the mayor's firing of the police chief.

The council voted 4-2 Thursday night after an hour-long executive session in support of Mayor Billy Stephens despite several town residents who attended the meeting in support of former Police Chief Robert Jones.

Jones told reporters that he wasn't surprised but was upset because he didn't think the council considered all he had done to make Bono safe.

Stephens declined comment after the meeting. He has said previously that he fired Jones on Dec. 23 for insubordination after Jones failed to assign an officer that Stephens had specified to provide code enforcement.
