Trudy Kumpe

Where I live: I live in the Hillcrest neighborhood of Little Rock with my husband, Peter, five dogs and six chickens. The chickens live outside.

Occupation: I am a scientific writer and editor for Biotechnical Services, Inc., in North Little Rock.

My favorite space is: My upstairs sewing room that doubles as a meditation room.

Why? Because this is a room in which I always feel cozy and relaxed. Plus, I can hide from my husband and dogs for a while to sew or organize my projects. There are two windows that open out to a wonderful view of the houses and street below. The room used to be Peter’s meditation room, so I think there is a quality of calmness which is necessary whenever I have a sewing problem.

If I could make one change to improve this space, I would: Our house is an older home that was built to have the main living areas on the first floor and bedrooms upstairs. If I could make one change, I would reconstruct our downstairs so that my sewing space could be on the same level as our kitchen and living room to avoid going up and down stairs to answer the doorbell or tend to a dish in the oven. I’m ambivalent about a change, though, because I’d have more interruptions, so maybe not. Sometimes what one has in a given space is good without thinking of improvements.
