Arkansas Weekend: Oaklawn season

By The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

This article was published January 8, 2014 at 10:07 a.m.

As Arkansans continue to recover from the end-of-the-year holiday crush, the thunder of hooves grows louder in Hot Springs, Jennifer Nixon writes in Thursday's Arkansas Weekend section.

Oaklawn Park’s 2014 live racing season begins with a bang Friday and continues through April 12 with three months of racing, betting and socializing.

“It’s a social event,” media relations manager Jennifer Hoyt says. “People make it an annual trip.”

They also make it a family event.

“We’ve done a lot in the last several years to make things more family friendly,” she explains, pointing to the kids zone that opens in the infield (with a clear view of the track) when the weather gets warmer in March.

Read about changes for the 2014, including a new bar, wagering options and the Oaklawn Anywhere app.
