A man suspected of firing a flare gun at a police officer in Woodruff County was arrested late Tuesday night after a lengthy standoff, authorities said.

The 32-year-old man, identified as Eric D. Bottoms, reportedly fired the flare gun at an officer who was trying to arrest him and then refused to come out of 1008 N. 13th St. in Augusta, Arkansas State Police said in a news release. The standoff began about 3 p.m.

The state police SWAT team responded to the scene about 4 p.m. to assist local authorities and "were able to begin speaking" to Bottoms about 9:30 p.m., the release said.

He surrendered shortly after 11 p.m. and arrested on a charge of aggravated assault.
