Nearly 2,500 early ballots cast in Senate race

JONESBORO — Craighead County Clerk Kade Holliday says nearly 2,500 early votes have been cast in a special election to fill a vacant state Senate seat.

Democrat Steve Rockwell and Republican John Cooper are seeking to fill the seat left vacant by the August resignation of Paul Bookout after Bookout was cited for misusing campaign funds.

Holliday told The Jonesboro Sun that turnout has been strong and that he's "been very, very busy." His office said that by Friday there had been 2,479 votes cast.

Early voting began Tuesday at the Craighead County Election Annex in Jonesboro and at the courthouse in Lake City.

The last day for early voting is Monday and the election is Tuesday with polls open from 7:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.
