Bryant's finance director resigns; city's mayor blames council members

Bryant's finance director has resigned only three months after he was hired, the city's mayor said Monday.

Bryant mayor Jill Dabbs told Arkansas Online that the city's finance director Dennis Edwards submitted his resignation in a letter to her and that he did not give a reason for his departure.

In a letter released Monday afternoon, Dabbs blamed other city council members for Edwards' resignation, citing recent "gotcha" rumors and what she called "a barrage" of Freedom of Information Act requests on his department that purportedly hindered its ability to prepare a budget proposal for 2014 and create "sound" financial reports.

"The loss of any good employee for such trivial reasons is shameful, but to lose someone of Mr. Edwards' integrity, dedication and competence is an outrage," Dabbs said.

She said it was the aldermen's determination to cast a negative light on her for Edwards' resignation and that their efforts "continue to catch good employees like Dennis Edwards in the crosshairs."

Dabbs would not elaborate why other council members would want to cast a negative spotlight on her in a phone call with Arkansas Online.

Dabbs hired Dennis as the city's finance director on Oct. 14, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. Dabbs said in her letter that she has contacted three accounting firms for their help in finishing the city's 2013 financial statements.
