Authorities are investigating the death of a child after he was fatally struck by a car Monday afternoon in Bryant.

The 5-year-old boy, whose name is not being released at this time, was run over by a vehicle driven by Shannon Stewart, 37, who was moving his girlfriend's car to wash it at a residence on Derek Court, the Bryant Police Department said in a statement.

Stewart ran over the child as he began to move the car into the street, stopping when he realized what had happened, police said. After checking on the boy, Stewart took him to Saline Memorial Hospital, where the child was pronounced dead later that day.

Police determined later that Stewart's girlfriend was the mother of the boy, Bryant Police Department spokesman Sgt. Todd Crowson said.

I fail to understand how this happens. Who was watching the boy? Kid never had a chance. Tragic.

Sounds a little fishy to me! I mean he's the boyfriend and the boys mother was his girlfriend.. Neither of them knew the little boy was outside? Who was watching him? Either the man was under the influence of something or who knows could have been Intended. I know where my 6 year old is at all times..poor little guy!

I'm amazed at all of the parents that are with their kids 24-7-365; it must be uncomfortable to use the bathroom with your kids watching.
