Greenwood mayor resigns, citing medical reasons

GREENWOOD — The mayor of a western Arkansas town has resigned.

The Southwest Times Record reports that Greenwood Mayor Del Gabbard resigned this week. He cited medical reasons and "the toll that this job has taken over the past two years."

Gabbard just started the last year of his four-year term. The Greenwood City Council met in special session Tuesday to officially accept Gabbard's resignation. City Councilman and mayor pro tem Jimmy Gossett will take over day-to-day operations until a special election is held to fill the vacancy.

Gabbard suffered from pancreatitis and had gall-bladder removal surgery in late 2012 and early 2013. He was inactive for about three months.
