Man pleads guilty to murder of Memphis officer

MEMPHIS — A Mississippi man has pleaded guilty to fatally shooting his wife's ex-husband and a Memphis police officer.

Alexander Haydel entered a plea Tuesday to first-degree murder charges in the deaths of Officer Timothy Warren and Arthur Warren on July 3, 2011, at the Doubletree Hotel in Memphis. The victims are not believed to be related.

With the plea deal, he avoids a trial where he would have faced the death penalty if convicted.

Police said Haydel and his wife were visiting from Cleveland, Miss. They got into an argument on Beale Street and the woman's ex-husband, Arthur Warren, who also is from Cleveland, stepped in.

An indictment says Haydel confronted Arthur Warren in the hotel and shot him. Police said Haydel shot Officer Timothy Warren as he responded.
