Memphis officer stabbed; suspect shot

A Memphis police officer was stabbed and a suspect was shot Monday night after authorities responded to a call regarding a mentally ill man wielding a knife.

The man, identified as 44-year-old Glen Jones, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, police said.

Officers responded about 7:11 p.m. to a call reporting an "armed mental consumer" at a home at 1531 E. McLemore Ave. in south Memphis, where they encountered Jones, according to a Memphis Police Department statement. An officer from the Police Department's Crisis Intervention Team, which responds to calls dealing with those who suffer from mental illness, ordered Jones to disarm himself, and Jones ran back inside the home, police said.

Officers set up a perimeter and learned from another resident that Jones was in the house with a knife and that there were more people inside, police said.

Jones emerged from the house and, in an altercation with officers, stabbed an officer in the left forearm with a knife, and that officer shot Jones, police said. It wasn't clear where on his body Jones was shot.

The injured officer, whom the department has not yet identified, was taken to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis in stable condition and was later released, police said. Jones was also taken to The Med, in critical condition, but his condition has since been upgraded.
