6 dogs, 1 cat stolen from Texarkana animal shelter

TEXARKANA — Authorities are searching for at least two people who broke into a Texarkana animal shelter and stole six pit bulls, one cat and 1,000 pounds of dog food.

Police said the burglary happened Monday night at the Animal Care and Adoption Center. Shelter Executive Director Connie Slater said surveillance video captured the burglary.

Slater told the Texarkana Gazette that the burglars took four black-and-white pit bulls, two chocolate-and-white pit bulls and one long-hair cat. She said the burglars also took dog food, two dog houses, vaccination kits and puppy formula.

Slater said a witness saw at least two people coming from the direction of the center with several dogs. The witness said one of the dogs ran into the road and was struck by a vehicle. The animals remain missing.
