Yell County voters approves tax for new jail

DANVILLE — Voters in Yell County have approved a sales-tax increase to pay for a new county jail.

The measure passed in a special election Tuesday, with about 58 percent of voters supporting the measure. The $7 million jail will be built in Danville and will replace current detention centers in Dardanelle and Danville.

The 1-cent tax increase includes a temporary ¾-cent tax to fund construction of the facility, and a ¼-cent permanent tax to fund maintenance and operations.

Officials say the new jail is needed because the current facilities don't meet state standards.

Yell County Judge Mark Thone told The Courier that he's pleased voters recognized the need for a new jail.
