SUV hits tree; passenger killed, driver hurt

A passenger was killed and a driver injured Wednesday morning after a sport utility vehicle hit a tree in Nevada County, police said.

Christopher Smith, 24, of Prescott was driving a 1996 Ford SUV south on U.S. 371 south of Prescott when the vehicle left the road shortly before 9 a.m., according to an Arkansas State Police report. Investigators say the SUV then hit a tree.

Smith was taken to an area hospital with unspecified injuries. A passenger, identified as 18-year-old Prescott resident Edgar Moreno-Lopez, suffered fatal injuries.

The report didn't indicate what may have caused the SUV to leave the highway. Conditions were described as clear and dry at the time.

The death marked the 13th fatality in a traffic crash in Arkansas so far this year.
