Trial set for man accused in Oklahoma church plot

TULSA — An Illinois man charged with plotting to blow up dozens of northeast Oklahoma churches is set to go on trial.

Gregory Arthur Weiler II of Elk Grove Village, Ill., is due in court Friday to stand trial on a charge of possessing an unregistered, destructive device. Weiler elected to have his case heard by a federal judge, rather than a jury.

Prosecutors accused Weiler plotting to bomb 48 churches in Ottawa County, though no one was injured and no explosives were set off.

Weiler was found mentally incompetent last April and was committed to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility, but a judge this month found him mentally competent to stand trial. Weiler's defense attorney has said his client was restored to competence through the use of medication.
