Commission recommends NLR site for new veterans home

The Arkansas Veterans Commission voted Tuesday to recommend that the state's new veterans home be built in North Little Rock.

The commission reviewed 20 site proposals from around the state, and visited three of the sites over the past month after whittling the list down to four — two in Jacksonville and one each in North Little Rock and Searcy — in December.

Commission Chairman Bob Schoenborn said the North Little Rock site was attractive and his leading recommendation if the Department of Veterans Affairs could secure the property from the federal government.

Cissy Rucker, the director the Department of Veterans Affairs, said she would take the commission's recommendation into consideration when she decides the site of the new home. Rucker said she expects to release her decision in the next two weeks.

But Rucker said federal funding for the project will be delayed until the next fiscal year if the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs does not move the state up in its priority ranking for veterans homes.
