Glitch causes early payday for state employees

Officials are working to determine what caused state employees to get their paychecks deposited two days early this week.

The Department of Finance and Administration said the biweekly payroll was processed Wednesday, meaning state employees who normally get direct deposits Friday already have the money in their bank accounts.

The agency warned the unintended Wednesday deposit will take the place of the Friday one and there won't be more wages deposited until the next regularly scheduled payday, which comes Feb. 7.

"We regret the inconvenience that this has caused our agencies and employees," Kay Terry, a spokesman for the administration, said in a statement. "We are working to determine exactly what triggered this process earlier than normal and to prevent a recurrence."

Terry said officials don't believe the glitch was caused by the week's holiday schedule, though the cause remains unclear.

She said there was initially some confusion from workers who thought perhaps they couldn't spend the money because it might be taken back out of their accounts. It won't be, and workers can treat the funds just like they would if it were deposited on a normal payday.

"Just don’t expect another paycheck on Friday," Terry said.
