Earnings report

Companies reporting quarterly earnings Wednesday included:

General Dynamics Corp., the government contractor, a profit of $495 million, or $1.40 a share, up from a loss of $2.13 billion, or $6.07 a share, a year ago. Revenue rose less than 1 percent to $8.11 billion. Shares rose $4.35 Wednesday to close at $99.65.

Norfolk Southern Corp., the railroad, a profit of $513 million, or $1.64 a share, up from $413 million, or $1.30 a share, a year ago. Revenue rose 7.5 percent to $2.88 billion. Shares rose $4.23 to close at $92.94.

Progressive Corp., the auto insurer, a profit of $299.8 million, or 50 cents a share, up from $249.1 million, or 41 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue from premiums rose 5.8 percent to $4.34 billion. Shares slipped 52 cents to close at $25.41.

U.S. Bancorp, the nation’s largest regional lender, a profit of $1.46 billion, or 76 cents a share, up from $1.42 billion, or 72 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue fell 4.4 percent to $4.89 billion. Shares fell 14 cents to close at $41.44.
