J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. on Thursday reported record fourth-quarter earnings of $92 million, up 9.4 percent from the $84 million earned in the same period of 2012.

For the full year of 2013, the firm posted net earnings of $342.4 million, or diluted earnings per share of $2.87, up 10 percent from $310.4 million, or diluted earnings per share of $2.59, in 2012.

Fourth-quarter earnings per share came to 77 cents, up from 70 cents in the year-ago period.

Total revenue for the quarter was $1.47 billion, up 10 percent from $1.34 billion in the previous fourth quarter. The Lowell-based transportation company cited a 13 percent growth in its intermodal unit; new customer accounts driving up its Dedicated Contract Services unit revenue by 17 percent; and higher load count boosting revenue 13 percent in its Integrated Capacity Solutions unit.

The company's truck unit, meanwhile, saw a 19 percent decrease in revenue from last year as its fleet size diminished by 11 percent, the company said. J.B. Hunt in December shifted around leadership of its truck segment, a move it said would help turn it "into a consistently profitable business."
