Free tax-prep day set for February in LR

Little Rock residents can get free professional help with preparing and filing their tax returns in a February event called "Super Saturday," city officials announced in a statement Monday.

The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Arkansas Workforce Center, 5401 S. University Ave. Reservations are not required, but appointments can be made by calling (501) 682-7719 or (501) 682-0228.

W. J. Monagle, executive director of the Little Rock Workforce Investment Board, said several IRS-certified volunteers will be available to not only help participants complete and file their tax returns, but also to determine whether they qualify for certain tax credits.

Those who earn less than $51,500 may qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit — a federal tax credit designed to help low-to-moderate income families — and could save up to $6,000, city officials said. Tax preparers at "Super Saturday" will be able to help participants determine if they qualify for the credit.

"We want Little Rock residents to know that they may be eligible to take the [tax credit] when they file their taxes this year," Little Rock Mayor Mark Stodola said in a statement. "This tax credit is a big financial boost to many low and moderate income families."

Free tax help will also be available until April 15 at specific locations in Little Rock. A listing can be found at www.eitclocations.com.
