Filmmaker and North Little Rock native Jay Russell, whose feature credits include End of the Line, Ladder 49 and Tuck Everlasting, will discuss his film The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep, before and after a screening today in Room 103, Stanley Russ Hall, University of Central Arkansas, 201 Donaghey Ave., Conway.

As part of the university’s visiting filmmaker series, in collaboration with the Little Rock Film Festival, Russell will participate in a film discussion, hosted by Bruce Hutchinson, director of graduate studies and associate professor of digital filmmaking at UCA, 5:45-6:45 p.m., and in a question-and-answer session following the 7 p.m. screening.

Whale of a film

The Little Rock Film Festival’s Argenta Film Series will screen Blackfish, a documentary about a whale that killed several people while in captivity, at 7 p.m. today at the Argenta Community Theater, 405 Main St., North Little Rock.

Hearts in Hillcrest

The Hillcrest Merchants Associ-ation have hidden 22 “hearts” in businesses around the Little Rock neighborhood for a “Find Your Heart in Hillcrest” scavenger hunt, today-Feb. 12. Find a heart, list the business where you found it and where it was hidden; find 10 hearts to be eligible to win more than $2,000 in gift cards, services and goods. A list of participating merchants is available online at hillcrestmerchants.net. A drawing among eligible contestants will take place at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 13 at the Hillcrest Merchants Association’s monthly meeting at Pulaski Heights Presbyterian Church, 4401 Woodlawn Drive, Little Rock.

Science After Dark

The Museum of Discovery,500 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock, will hold its January “Science After Dark” program, this month focusing on the science of good and bad habits, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday. The evening, open only to adults 21 and older, will feature junk-food science experiments and demonstrations about the dangers of nicotine; a Keep Arkansas Beautiful representative will discuss recycling and a museum employee will demonstrate reductions in carbon footprint.

Authors’ lecture

Tom Franklin and Beth Ann Fennelly, husband-andwife authors of The Tilted World, will lecture, read and take part in a discussion of the book at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Vada Sheid Community Development Center, Arkansas State University-Mountain Home, 1600 S. Searcy auditions

Performing Arts Center on the Square, 219 W. Arch St., Searcy, will hold auditions for the comedy See How They Run by Philip King, 5:30 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Sunday.
