Sen. Pryor to take Miranda Luke to State of Union

LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas' U.S. Senator Mark Pryor says he has invited Miranda Luke of Greenwood to accompany him to Tuesday's State of the Union address.

Miranda's husband, Capt. Samson Luke, was an active-duty officer who deployed for combat in Iraq twice and served as an Arkansas Army National Guardsmen. During a required training weekend at Fort Chaffee, Luke was authorized to spend Saturday night with his family but passed away at his home.

Because he passed away at his home and not on a base or hotel, the Army said the family was not eligible for the $100,000 death gratuity or funeral expense benefits they would otherwise receive.

Pryor fought for the family, inserting the "Luke provision" in a defense bill to ensure that military families receive the death benefits they deserve.
