The Central Arkansas Library System is offering crafts, movie showings and book readings for families in its participation of a nationwide event called Take Your Child to the Library Day.

"Special crafts" — including scavenger hunts, puppet shows and coloring contests — will be held Saturday at Central Arkansas Library System branches, the system said in a statement. Programing will vary at the system's 14 locations, but the first 50 families to arrive at each branch will receive a reusable bag.

The event is free and public.

This is the second time Central Arkansas Library System branches are observing Take Your Child to the Library Day, said Lisa Donovan, Arkansas' state representative and the library system's youth coordinator. The celebration is in its third year, and the idea for it was conceived in a Connecticut library.

About 17 states are participating in the event, according to the event's website.

Also Saturday, a new type of library card geared toward families will be available at the branches for the first time, library officials said. The family card is a group account that will cover up to 10 family members living in the same home. It allows parents to access information about items their children check out using the card.

The main account holder for the family card must be at least 18 years old and will be responsible for any fines or fees.

Central Arkansas Library card holders in "good standing with full borrowing privileges" may change their current card to a family card, library officials said.
