LR man sought in fatal shooting arrested

A Little Rock man who, police say, fatally shot another man Saturday has been taken into custody Thursday afternoon.

Steven Hayes, 27, of 3308 Holt St. was taken into custody without incident shortly before 6 p.m. at a residence on South Main Street, Little Rock Police Department spokesman Lt. Sidney Allen said in a statement.

About 6:30 p.m. Saturday, officers were called to 3224 Elam St. Police said Hayes took out a handgun during a disturbance and fatally shot Shoncoven Smith, 22, of Little Rock, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette previously reported.

Smith was taken to Baptist Health Medical Center-Little Rock, where he died nearly an hour later, Pulaski County Coroner Gerone Hobbs said. Hayes also fired shots several times at a person who was trying to run away, police said.

Allen said Hayes will be charged with first-degree murder and first-degree battery. Hayes was also wanted on a charge of possession of a firearm by certain persons, the newspaper reported.
