Stabbed Memphis officer who shot suspect named

Memphis police have identified the officer who earlier this month shot a knife-wielding mentally ill man who had stabbed him.

Officer Joel Dunaway, 32, was stabbed by 44-year-old Glen Jones after authorities responded Jan. 13 to a call regarding a mentally ill man with a knife, the Memphis Police Department said.

Officers arrived about 7:11 p.m. after a call reporting an "armed mental consumer" at a home at 1531 E. McLemore Ave. in south Memphis, where they encountered Jones, according to a Memphis Police Department statement. An officer from the Police Department's Crisis Intervention Team, which responds to calls dealing with those who suffer from mental illness, ordered Jones to disarm himself, and Jones ran back inside the home, police said.

Officers set up a perimeter and learned from another resident that Jones was in the house with a knife and that there were more people inside, police said.

Jones emerged from the house and, in an altercation with officers, stabbed Dunaway in the left forearm with a knife, and Dunaway then shot Jones, police said. It wasn't clear where on his body Jones was shot.

Jones, who was taken to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis in critical condition and has since been released, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder in Dunaway's stabbing, police said.

Dunaway, who has worked for the Memphis Police Department since April 2010, was taken to The Med in stable condition and was later released. He has been relieved of duty with pay.
