NLR expects fireworks calls to start rolling in Thursday

The North Little Rock Fire Department expects fireworks-violation calls to start coming in later this week as residents celebrate the Fourth of July, but says it projects a normal call volume this year.

It is illegal to shoot fireworks within the city limits, and offenders should be reported by calling the North Little Rock Police Department’s non-emergency number at (501) 758-1234 to report fireworks, the department said.

"Even though there's ordinances and press releases [about fireworks] people still do it," fire marshal Dean Simmons said. "Usually the calls start up around the third of July, and we usually are still getting a few on the fifth."

Fire Department Capt. John Pflasterer said the non-emergency number is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The North Little Rock Fire Department said fines for violating the fireworks law can range from $25 to $500, and fireworks used in violations will be confiscated.

Meanwhile, the city of Little Rock said Monday that it would extend the hours of its 311 non-emergency line so residents can report the illegal use of fireworks from 4 p.m. until midnight Friday and Saturday.
