Foundation boosts healthy moms, babies

The Beau Foundation will mark Prenatal Care Week with the 11th annual Beau Classic golf tournament at Pinnacle Country Club. Proceeds from the tournament will help the foundation support the Prenatal Pathways program at Community Clinic.

Prenatal Pathways, now in its 11th year, provides prenatal health care to low-income, uninsured expectant mothers through the 28th week of their pregnancy. Care includes prenatal exams, laboratory tests, prenatal vitamins and dietary counseling.

"Through the support of the Beau Foundation, our Prenatal Pathways program has assisted over 12,500 low-income and uninsured women access quality prenatal services at three of Community Clinic's service sites -- Rogers, Springdale and Siloam Springs," said Kathy Grisham, executive director at Community Clinic.

Gwen and Terry Matthews established the Beau Foundation in memory of their son, Beau Alexander Matthews.

"The medical costs for infants born underweight is nearly 10 times higher than for a baby of normal weight ($32,325 vs. $3,325)," Terry Matthews said. "When women access prenatal care, sooner and later, it saves as much as $3,200 in medical costs per person. Not only the Beau Foundation's support of the Parental Pathways program makes financial sense, it is the right thing to do for our community."

The Beau Classic will also offer the opportunity to participate in raffles for airline tickets, golf outings, dinners and a hotel stay.
