Man accused in fatal shooting pleads innocent

A Little Rock man accused in a Saturday fatal shooting pleaded innocent Thursday morning.

Evan Clegg, who also goes by the street name "Elbows," 20, was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Roderick Knowlton, 21, of Little Rock. Clegg is being held in lieu of $250,000 bond after entering his plea.

Clegg's lawyer, Rob Berry, asked District Judge Alice Lightle for a bail amount of $50,000. Berry argued that this was Clegg's first offense and that he had cooperated with police, turning himself over voluntarily when he found out there was a warrant out for his arrest, but Lightle ruled for the higher bail.

Berry said outside the courtroom that he understood the judge's decision because of the serious nature of the crime. Berry is being retained by Clegg's parents, who were also at the court hearing, along with some of Clegg's extended family.

Clegg is accused of shooting Knowlton multiple times in the 2100 block of Pine Street shortly before noon Saturday. Knowlton was taken to UAMS Medical Center for treatment, where he died from his injuries shortly thereafter.

Clegg is a student at Pulaski Technical College and lives with his mother.
