A child died and three other people were injured in a collision between a train and a car Thursday morning in Pulaski County.
It happened shortly after 8 a.m. in Sweet Home at a railroad crossing at Harper Road and Arkansas 365, Pulaski County sheriff's office Lt. Carl Minden said.
The Union Pacific train reportedly hit the Chrysler 300 as the car was being driven from Harper onto Arkansas 365. The impact sent the car more than a quarter-mile down the track, into a remote area surrounded by woods on each side and not easily accessible by vehicle.
One victim, a young girl, was taken from the scene by helicopter with a leg injury. Two others, a teenager and an adult, were taken away on stretchers by emergency responders who walked down the tracks to access the scene.
The child passenger, whose age was not clear, died at the scene.
Authorities are responding Thursday morning to a wreck involving a train and a car in the Sweet Home area that left a child dead and injured three other people.
Pulaski County sheriff’s office spokesman Lt. Carl Minden said the initial report was that at least one person was trapped in the car. He confirmed later that a child had died in the accident and that three other people were injured.
Emergency responders were seen about 9:20 a.m. carrying one person from the crash on a stretcher. The man was in a neck brace but clearly conscious.
A medical helicopter was seen taking off from the area moments earlier, though it wasn't known whether any victims from the crash were on board.
An Arkansas Online reporter is on the scene, and we will update with more information as it becomes available.
