Deputy on administrative leave after shooting

A Jefferson County sheriff's deputy is on paid administrative leave after shooting a man at a bar in Pine Bluff, authorities said.

Pine Bluff Police Department officers were dispatched to Swann's Bar and Lounge, 3003 W. Pullen St., at 3:26 a.m. Saturday after a 911 call regarding a shooting, Jefferson County sheriff's office Maj. Lafayette Woods said. Officers arrived to find Dedric Jones, 36, with a single gunshot wound in his chest.

A Jefferson County sheriff's deputy, whom authorities won't identify until an investigation has been completed, took responsibility for the shooting and was placed on paid administrative leave, Woods said.

Jones is still in the hospital and was in stable condition headed to emergency surgery the last time the sheriff's office received an update, Woods said.

Woods said the sheriff's office does not currently know what prompted the shooting. It is unknown at this time whether the deputy was on duty when the shooting occurred.

Woods said all evidence will be evaluated as the internal investigation progresses.
