Head-on crash on U.S. 63 kills 2 in Jefferson County

Two men were killed in a head-on crash Saturday night on U.S. 63 in Jefferson County, authorities said.

Aaron Durham, 20, of Rison was driving a GMC pickup north about 11 p.m. when his vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a Chevy pickup, driven by Caleb Spaulding, 18, of Montrose, head-on, according to an Arkansas State Police preliminary accident report.

A Toyota Camry headed south hit the back of Spaulding's pickup, which caught fire after the impact, the report states. Neither of the two people in the Toyota was injured, according to the report.

Both Durham and Spaulding died as a result of their injuries from the crash, authorities said. Taylor Young, 22, of Portland, who was in the Chevy with Spaulding, was also injured in the crash, state police said.

The deaths raised to 211 the number of fatalities in vehicle accidents on Arkansas roads so far this year, according to preliminary state police figures.

Pine Bluff police officers on their way to help Arkansas State Police investigate the crash were also injured after their cars collided.
