NLR police: SUV's thief fled at high speed

A sport utility vehicle that was later determined to have been stolen sped off when authorities tried to stop it early Tuesday in North Little Rock, police said.

The driver of the stolen Chevy HHR, identified as 30-year-old Joshua Davis, was arrested after he got out and ran a short time after an officer tried to pull him over, according to a North Little Rock police report.

Authorities say an officer first attempted to pull over the vehicle about 3:30 a.m. after spotting it "driving recklessly" near John Ashley and Fendley drives.

But the HHR "did a U-turn in the middle of the road and took off at a high rate of speed," the report said. The officer followed the fleeing vehicle for about a mile before Davis "bailed out" near 1404 Division St., the report siad. He was arrested behind a house about a block away.

Police say they later learned the HHR had been stolen just before the attempted traffic stop and that Davis also made off with the victim's phone. He still had the phone when he was arrested, the report noted.

Davis remained in the Pulaski County jail Tuesday morning with bail set at $26,000. A preliminary court appearance is set later Tuesday.
