LR considers 44 in open position for city's No. 2

More than 230 people applied for Little Rock's assistant city manager position.

The filing period closed at the end of June, and the city's Human Resources team has since sorted through the 232 applications and forwarded a "qualified pile" of 44 to City Manager Bruce Moore for his review.

Moore said he will take a few months to look over the applications and interview finalists before sending a job offer. He hopes to make a selection by Labor Day, he said.

Applications came in from 30 states, but mostly from Arkansas. The 44 being considered by Moore hail from Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Washington.

Interim Assistant City Manager Caran Curry, who was the city's grants coordinator, has applied for the position. Housing and Neighborhood Programs Director Andre Bernard has also applied.

The assistant city manager is the No. 2 person in charge in Little Rock's form of city government. The position has several department heads reporting to it and also has a role working with the city board and filling in during the city manager's absence.

Former Assistant City Manager Bryan Day left the job last month when he was hired as the executive director of the Little Rock Port Authority. Day had worked for the city for 20 years.

Moore has said Day will be hard to replace and leaves behind "big shoes to fill."
