Like It Is

Summerall Classic will be fun-filled day on course

It is going to be a day of golf, fun and football when the annual Pat Summerall Classic tees off July 28 at beautiful Chenal Country Club.

There will be a heavy emphasis on the fun and this year's tournament, presented by Deltic Timber, has Wilson Sporting Goods and Best Buy coming up with a total of 50 prizes that will be given away for play and door prizes.

The door prizes will be random drawings held after the tournament at the reception "Talking Football" with Ken Hatfield, David Bazzel and Bruce James.

A sampling of door prizes includes TVs, a smart phone and NFL footballs like the ones used on the Sunday of Breast Cancer Awareness and the Salute to Servicemen.

There also will be Nexus and Ionix golf bags for the top teams, along with prizes for longest drive and closest to the hole competitions. There are even prizes for last place, which further illustrates the emphasis on fun.

The day will start with lunch, then golf and will finish with the reception that will have hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar.

Of course, there will be gifts for every player when they register and each team will be paired with a celebrity. So in addition to playing a perfect course there is a chance to play with someone such as Joe Kleine, Kevin McReynolds, Matt Jones, Pat Bradley, Clint Stoerner, Anthony Lucas, Chuck Dicus or Larry Lacewell, and that's just to name a few who give their time and efforts for the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame.

There is no greater honor in athletics in this state than to be voted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame. Membership is open and costs only $75 a year, and with that goes full voting rights, an exclusive window decal and free visits to the Hall of Fame Museum.

The Pat Summerall Classic is $1,700 per team, and that includes all festivities, and every player who registers is eligible for the prize drawings. The Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame is a 501c3 organization so part of the entry fee is deductible.

It isn't unusual for the Arkansas Razorbacks to have players named to preseason watch lists, and it's certainly no shock that Trey Flowers was on the watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, which is given to the best defensive player in the nation.

Nor was it a surprise that Alex Collins and Jonathan Williams made the Maxwell list for the top college football player.

Hunter Henry was named as one to watch for the Mackey Award.

Just understand, it is a long time between now and December when the awards are actually presented.

...

The same warning is true for Darion Griswold, but the Arkansas State tight end is the first Red Wolf to be named to the Mackey watch list and that makes it a little special for the Dumas native.

Griswold is an extremely talented athlete who played quarterback in high school -- he could throw it a country mile -- and was a great basketball player too.

He played basketball for John Brady at ASU before focusing his attention on football.

Did LeBron James not learn anything from the distasteful way he left the Cleveland Cavaliers when he, as he put it, took his talents to South Beach?

James recently opted out of his contract with the Miami Heat and made himself a free agent.

Apparently the rift between him and Cavs owner Dan Gilbert could be smoothed out.

Or is James just flirting with the Cavs like he did before he left and intends to stay in Miami? Or will he sign with someone else?

James is the greatest active NBA player, but even he isn't good enough to pull the same shenanigans twice.
