Civil War markers approved in Phillips, Benton counties

Two applications for historical markers in Benton and Phillips counties were approved by the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission on Wednesday.

Peter Van Winkle’s Mill, which was destroyed during the Civil War, will be commemorated in Van Winkle Hollow within the Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area in Rogers, the commission said in a statement.

The Delta Heritage Trail State Park in Helena-West Helena will play host to a marker to commemorate the Jan. 12, 1863, Lick Creek Skirmish. The marker will be placed at the Lick Creek Trailhead within the park.

The commission said it hopes to have at least one marker in each Arkansas county by the end of 2015. So far, the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission has approved 83 markers in 51 of the state's 75 counties.
