Ed Choate, president and CEO of Delta Dental, examines part of the new Delta Dental of Arkansas Foundation Oral Health Clinic at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences on Friday.

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences announced Friday that Delta Dental of Arkansas Foundation Oral Health Clinic will be the new name for its oral health clinic.

The Delta Dental of Arkansas Foundation announced in January 2013 it would pledge $2 million toward the clinic, which had just opened. The clinic will be a part of the Center for Dental Education in the UAMS College of Health Professions.

The dental residency program will welcome its first residents in July 2015, the university said in a news release.

Two faculty dentists currently provide comprehensive dental care in the clinic, and senior dental students from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry were hosted for clinical rotations early this year.

The 7,500-square-foot clinic includes nine general dental exam rooms with an additional room under construction, one sedation suite for more complex procedures and two overflow exam rooms shared with the clinic for the university's dental hygiene program.

The Center for Dental Education was established in 2012 as a hub for dental education programs at UAMS, the release states.

How about starting a college of dentistry? Arkansas is the only state without one.
