Deputy resigns after Pine Bluff shooting

A Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy involved in a shooting at a bar and grill in Pine Bluff has resigned amid an internal investigation, the sheriff’s office said.

Jefferson County sheriff’s office criminal investigator Randy Jackson resigned Friday after an internal investigation was launched into the shooting of a man at Swann’s Bar and Grill, 3003 W. Pullen St., on July 5, Jefferson County sheriff’s Maj. Layfette Woods said in a statement. Jackson is accused of shooting 36-year-old Dedric Jones in the chest in front of the bar about 3:30 a.m.

Jones underwent emergency surgery at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff and has since been released from the hospital, Woods said.

Details are still not being released surrounding the circumstances of the shooting; however, Woods said, the department will be continuing the investigation, even after Jackson’s resignation. Woods said that while Jackson will face no further consequences from the department, he could still face criminal charges.

A criminal investigation was completed earlier and was forwarded to the Jefferson County prosecutor’s office, which still has not determined whether it will be filing charges against Jackson.
