Bergdahl returned to regular Army duty

By The Associated Press

This article was published July 14, 2014 at 10:59 a.m.

WASHINGTON — Bowe Bergdahl, the Army sergeant who spent nearly five years as a Taliban captive in Afghanistan, was returned to regular Army duty Monday and will be made available to Army investigators for questioning about his disappearance in 2009.

In a brief statement, the Army said Bergdahl is now assigned to U.S. Army North at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston in Texas, the same base where he has been decompressing from the effects of his lengthy captivity.

His exact duties were not immediately disclosed.

There has to be something going on here that we don't know. I thought it was without question that he abandoned his post. That's his tough luck that he then got picked up by the Taliban. I think he should still be courtmartialed for desertion.

He probably will be charged with something, and dishonorably discharged, but I hope they don't punish him any more than that. Five + years in a Taliban cage seems like plenty of punishment already.

I hear that there is a pretty big issue about his accrued combat pay, though.

I figure they want to debrief him thoroughly about what he may have seen, heard, etc. while amongst the Carpathians.

Wow, thanks. Never thought I would get that much love in this group short of changing my name to Ronald Reagan.

Bergdahl in a cage? Not likely, although I'm sure the Tali didn't allow him complete free run of the various places he stayed. What about those early reports he deliberately went looking for Taliban to sign on with them? Is all that now swept under the rug?

My own opinion is Bergdahl is a traitor or very close to a traitor, at the very least someone with very confused outlook on who we are and what we stand for, in contrast with what the Taliban, Al Qaeda, and various other jihadists stand for and practice.

I'm not letting him off the hook--naïveté is no excuse.
