Cool, dry air sweeps across state

A front is pushing cooler, drier air across Arkansas, keeping temperatures mild for the rest of the workweek, forecasters said Tuesday.

Daily low temperatures will sink to the high 50s and low 60s, and highs will rise only to the low 80s in much of the state through Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

The front will stall south of Arkansas by Wednesday and start moving north after that, weather service meteorologist John Robinson said in a statement. It will meet low pressure coming from the west Wednesday, starting the development of showers and thunderstorms across the state, he said.

Thursday into early Friday will bring “a very rainy period” that will feature heavy rain in some areas, likely leading to flash flood warnings, Robinson said. Isolated severe storms are possible Thursday afternoon and evening, particularly in the southwest part of the state, he said.

Rainfall totals should average 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches over north Arkansas; 1 1/2 inches to 3 inches in the central third of the state; and 2 to 5 inches in the south, Robinson said.
