A 69-year-old driver died Tuesday after his vehicle ran off a Conway road and hit a utility pole, authorities said.

Arkansas State Police say David E. Rolla of Conway was driving a 1999 Lincoln south just before 4:30 p.m. in the 700 block of East German Lane when the vehicle ran off the road. The Lincoln traveled into an embankment and then hit a concrete-and-metal light pole before coming to a rest in a nearby driveway.

Rolla, the only reported occupant in the Lincoln, was later pronounced dead.

It wasn't clear what caused the single-vehicle crash. Conditions at the time were said to be clear and dry.

The death was the 227th in a traffic crash in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
