A Hot Springs apartment building suffered significant damage in an early Wednesday morning fire.

200 Lakeland Drive, Hot Springs

An apartment building just outside Hot Springs suffered significant damage in an overnight fire.

The blaze was reported about 4 a.m. in Building C of a 24-unit complex at 200 Lakeland Drive, Garland County sheriff's office Lt. James Martin said.

Garland County Patrol Sgt. Roy Williams, who lives in the complex and in the building that burnt, was on duty and responded to the fire.

With the help of two other deputies, Williams began evacuating residents, Martin said in a statement. "Initial indications are that all residents of the “C” Building were evacuated safely."

Martin said part of a burning ceiling collapsed onto Williams during evacuations, and he received what appear to be first- and second-degree burns on the top of his head, arm and hands and will be kept for observation.

The fire's cause is unknown and there were no other known injuries, Martin said.

The Red Cross was meeting with displaced residents to determine how many needed a place to stay, Red Cross spokesman Brigette Williams said.

She said 22 of the building's apartments were occupied and more than 30 people were displaced.
