Nine UCA players on preseason team

Central Arkansas had nine players named to the preseason All-Southland Conference teams, including three first-team selections.

Senior wide receiver Dezmin Lewis, senior offensive tackle Cole Caruthers and junior Jonathan Woodard were named to the first team. Senior wide receiver Damien Watts, senior offensive guard C.J. Simon, senior place-kicker Eddie Camara, senior nose guard T.J. Randall, junior cornerback Dillion Winfrey and sophomore kick returner Jatavious Wilson were second-team selections.

Lewis was UCA's top receiver last season with 50 receptions for 721 yards and a team-high 7 touchdowns. He was a second-team All-Southland selection last season. Caruthers, 6-4, 292, was a second-team All-Southland selection in 2013. Woodard, a two-time All-Southland player, led the conference in sacks a year ago with eight and had 10 1/2 tackles for loss. He was the Southland freshman of the year in 2012.

UCA opens the season Aug. 30 at Texas Tech.

Oxendine wins opener at Match Play

Defending champion Julie Oxendine put down the first wave of youth while others formed in the Arkansas State Golf Association Women's Match Play tournament Wednesday in Hot Springs.

Oxendine, of Russellville, turned back Hot Springs' Samantha Patrico 3 and 1 in the quarterfinals at Hot Springs Country Club. Oxendine will face recent Bryant High graduate Peyton Weaver, a 1-up winner over Hot Springs' Nora Phillips, today in the semifinals.

Kirsten Garner, the younger sister of ASGA Stroke Play champion Seth Garner, won 4 and 3 over Rogers' Leslie Schwarz and will play Russellville's Libby Croom today. Croom won 4 and 2 over Glenwood's Emily Plyler.

Semifinals and finals will be played today.

Mabrey top Arkansan at Southern Am

Matt Mabrey of Little Rock had five birdies and four bogeys on the way to a 1-under-par 71 and a tie for 14th place after Wednesday's first round of the 108th Southern Amateur Championship at the Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn.

Grayson Murray of Raleigh, N.C., leads the tournament after shooting a 6-under 66. Trevor Cone of Concord, N.C., and Australia's Geoff Drakeford are two shots back after shooting 4-under 68s.

Austin Eoff of Benton shot a 4-over 76 on Wednesday. He was even par through 10 holes, then had bogeys on Nos. 11 and 12. After shooting a par on the 13th, Eoff double-bogeyed Nos. 14 and 15 to go to 6 over. He recovered with two birdies and a par in his final three holes. Johann Voss of Little Rock had five bogeys, a double bogey and a birdie on his way to a 6-over 78.
