Stone County escapee caught in Independence County

An inmate who escaped from the Stone County jail Wednesday afternoon has been recaptured in Independence County, authorities said.

The Stone County sheriff's office reported that Shane Lee Mitchell escaped before 4:15 p.m., though details on how he got away were not immediately released. Mitchell was being held in the jail for an unspecified probation or parole violation, police said.

Mitchell, 27, of Jonesboro was reportedly seen heading toward the eastern part of Stone County and possibly toward his hometown, the sheriff's office said initially. The agency about 2 a.m. posted on its Facebook page that Mitchell had been caught in Independence County.

Online records showed Mitchell remained in custody at the Independence County jail at 6:15 a.m.

Mitchell was paroled in January. His criminal history was not immediately available Thursday morning.
