SOUTH COFFEYVILLE, Okla. — The principal chief of the Cherokee Nation says the tribe will soon begin work on a new casino in northern Oklahoma near the border with Kansas.

Principal Chief Bill John Baker said the new casino in South Coffeyville will create about 100 jobs in the area. Groundbreaking on the casino is expected later this summer after construction bids are awarded and infrastructure improvements are finished.

The Tulsa World reported that the South Coffeyville casino will be the tribe's ninth casino within its 14-county jurisdictional area. South Coffeyville is about 70 miles northeast of Tulsa and is right along the border with Kansas.

The Cherokee Nation's other casinos are in Catoosa, Claremore, Fort Gibson, Ramona, Roland, Sallisaw, Tahlequah and West Siloam Springs.
