Razorback fans call the Hogs at Frank Broyles statue dedication

Hundreds of dignitaries, family members and friends gathered in front of the Broyles Athletic Center on Friday morning for the dedication of a statue honoring former University of Arkansas head football coach and athletic director Frank Broyles. The statue stands seven and a half feet and weighs more than 700 pounds. Dr. Gary Renegar sculpted the statue based on photos of Coach Broyles during his 19-year coaching career at the University of Arkansas. (By David Gottschalk)

While the “Hog Call” is a normal occurrence at any Razorback sports event, the signature chant is now officially trademarked.

Forbes reported on Friday that the United States Patent and Trademark Office granted registration of the signature “Woooooo. Pig. Sooie!” chant to the University of Arkansas board of trustees earlier this month.

According to the agency's website, the board filed to trademark the chant on July 26, 2013, and the official registration date was July 1.

The registrations of both the word and sound marks do not impact the use of the cheer by fans for non-commercial activities, the university said in a news release.

“The registration simply protects the university from anyone seeking to exploit the mark commercially — such as a TV commercial, radio or Internet — without a license or agreement from the university,” the release states. “Those wishing to obtain a license for these logos, word or sound marks may apply through the University of Arkansas Collegiate Licensing program.”

Well said wolfman, only in Arkansas would a hundreds of year old pig feeding call be trademarked.

I guess anyone can still commercially use the newer and cheaper "OW-Woooooo. Pig. Sooie" version. Doesn't look like they trademarked that one.

According to the Forbes article, the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office attorney who initially reviewed the application rejected it because chants at sporting events aren't necessarily associated with the event itself. The U of A overcame that by sending in a video similar to the one on this article of Frank Broyles leading a Hog Call. (Forbes found another one on YouTube.) We still can't let ol' Frank go, can we???

Arkansans spontaneously calling the hogs for the sheer joy of it is the same as illegally downloading a song.

How does the school own it? Actually registration doesnt necessarily mean all that much, but still. Wonder who owns "Defense! Defense!".

I don't know why they bothered to trademark it. No fan of a decent school would ever want it.
