Arkansans Across the Minors

News and notes

• Three players with Arkansas ties who were drafted in June's major league draft did not sign with the teams that drafted them by Friday's deadline. Parkers Chapel pitcher Eric White (Brewers), Pulaski Academy catcher Blake Wiggins (Phillies) and Arkansas Razorbacks outfielder Tyler Spoon (Athletics) all went unsigned. Wiggins has committed to play for the Razorbacks, where he'll be Spoon's teammate next season, while White has committed to UALR.

• Shortstop Brian Anderson (Arkansas Razorbacks) was promoted from short-season Class A Batavia to Class A Greensboro by the Miami Marlins organization on Tuesday. Anderson hit .273 with 3 home runs and 12 RBI in 20 games for the Muckdogs. Greensboro president and general manager Donald Moore said there were two reasons for Anderson's promotion. "He put up good numbers in Batavia, and the Marlins felt he was ready to advance," Moore said. "Our second baseman [during] the first half of the season, Avery Romero, has had a good year and they felt he was ready to advance to high [Class] A Jupiter."

• Pitcher James Baune (Southern Arkansas) was released by the Los Angeles Dodgers organization on Wednesday. Baune had a 1-0 record with a 7.39 ERA in 10 appearances for the Ogden Raptors, the Dodgers' rookie league team. He allowed 49 hits with 9 walks and 20 strikeouts in 31 2/3 innings. "Baune was released strictly due to poor play," Raptors radio broadcaster and media relations director Brandon Hart said. "He had a good attitude and was not a problem off or on the field. I'm guessing they just didn't see the potential in him that they see in other pitchers that they would rather give a chance to."

• Outfielder Doug Votolato (Central Arkansas), who has not played for the Spokane Indians (A Rangers) since June 20, suffered a leg injury that has required him to be in a walking boot. Dustin Toms, the Indians' director of public relations, said Votolato will be sent to the Rangers' rookie league team in Arizona for rehabilitation. "It's something between his tibia and fibula that's flared up. It's killed his speed," Toms said. "He's been in the boot for around 3-4 weeks now. His season is pretty much done with him being sent to Arizona for rehab. Good kid [who] deserves a shot. I'm sure we'll see him in Spokane again next season."

WHO'S HOT

DAVID HARRIS (Southern Arkansas) scored 5 runs on 8 hits, including 1 double and 2 home runs, in 6 games. Harris, who also had 3 RBI, raised his average to .241 this season.

DJ BAXENDALE (Arkansas Razorbacks/Jacksonville) earned his second consecutive victory July 13 vs. Dunedin (A+ Blue Jays) and lowered his ERA by 0.57 after allowing 1 earned run on 5 hits in 7 innings. Baxendale is 3-4 this season with a 5.69 ERA.

WHO'S NOT

ERIC FISHER (Arkansas Razorbacks) scored 1 run on 2 hits, including 1 home run, in 3 games. His average dropped 0.20 to .258.

COLBY SUGGS (Arkansas Razorbacks) took a tough loss and saw his ERA rise 0.86 after allowing 5 earned runs on 4 hits in 1/3 of an inning. Suggs is 1-5 this season with a 5.98 ERA.
