JAMES BURROW : LITTLE ROCK CENTRAL

Learning how things work is a passion for James Burrow.

While at Little Rock Central, Burrow not only enjoyed figuring out complex problems in the classroom, but he also thrived in dissecting the formations of some complicated defenses as the starting right tackle for the Tigers’ football team.

“I played the blindside tackle position. We had a left-handed quarterback, and it was my job was to protect him,” Burrow said. “You have to learn to adjust to what the defenses would throw at you. I enjoyed breaking them down and explaining to my teammates what to expect.”

Burrow was a two-year letterman as an offensive lineman, earning All-7A-East Conference honors as a senior.

“Practice was very structured and that was very good for me,” said Burrows, whose played the position at 5-11, 225 pounds. “It taught me a lot about teamwork.”

Burrow also graduated cum laude, scoring an impressive 35 on the ACT, compiling a 4.3 grade-point average and ranking in the top 2 percent in a class of 585 graduates.

“High school was fun and it was hard,” Burrow said. “I took a lot of advanced classes, but it was worth it.”

This fall, Burrow will head to the University of Arkansas where he will pursue a degree in biochemical engineering.

“I really enjoyed calculus. … and I like knowing how things work,” Burrows said. “I think my brain works like an engineer’s, so I think it’s only natural that I go into that field.”

Burrow has not decided what he eventually wants to do with a biochemical engineering degree.

“I’m banking on the first couple of years of college to determine what I really want to do,” Burrow said. “Ultimately, I think I may want to open up my own firm.”
