Cross County authorities warn residents about scams

The Cross County sheriff’s office is warning residents about two different scams that people have reported in the area.

In one scam, the callers claim to be with Publishers Clearing House and ask residents to go to Wal-Mart and send $199 to get a certified check, the sheriff's office said in a statement.

The sheriff's office has also received reports of calls from people claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service. The callers have told residents if they didn’t pay what they owed, they would be arrested.

The sheriff’s office said the caller ID displays "Internal Revenue Service" when those scam calls come through.

Officials urge people not to send money or give out any information to these callers. Residents who are contacted by callers claiming to be with the IRS should call the agency directly if there's any doubt of the call's legitimacy.
