Mississippi County court OKs hospital tax vote

BLYTHEVILLE, — Mississippi County residents will go to the polls in October to vote on a new half-cent sales tax to help the county hospital system.

The Blytheville Courier News reported that the Mississippi County Quorum Court passed a resolution Tuesday night to support holding a vote Oct. 14.

Justice Michael White said it's important to note that the court approving the vote does not mean it is endorsing the tax.

If approved, the tax would begin Jan. 1 and last for five years. It would net the hospital between $12 million and $15 million during that time.

The hospital board president said the funds would be used to recruit doctors and renovate the Blytheville and Osceola facilities. The idea is to get the system in shape to be sold or leased.
